Welcome to Cardio & Conservation

Making Science Accessible

Hi everyone, it’s me!

I am ‘Active Intellect’, Lauren. I’m just beginning my PhD in Biological Sciences. My research will focus on the behavioural affects of exposure to crude oil pollution in freshwater fish, with a focus on poeciliid species - guppies (Poecilia reticulata).

It has been my dream to work in research and I’m so excited to embark on this new journey.

For some strange reason, when I think back to when I decided I wanted to be a researcher - switching career track from zookeeping (a story for another day) - along with field research I desired to have an academic paper published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Odd dream, I know, but that’s what I wanted. And still want.

But as any of you who have read countless papers for your studies will know, these can be hard and, frankly, boring to read.

That’s where Cardio & Conservation comes in.

This blog has the aim of making science accessible. Sure, if I am published during my studies, I would love to share that with you. But this website will hopefully offer a way to actively engage with the science taking place by making it accessible for all - academics, non-academics, animal and conservation enthusiasts… I’m a Mum, so if I can make it fun for our kids too then even better!

Soon, I’m hoping to bring you the first episode of Cardio & Conservation in Conversation’ (do you enjoy the alliteration as much as I do?).

These will be scattered podcast episodes, recorded whenever the conversation arises; with friends, academics, scientists, students, conservationists… anyone with an involvement and real interest in wildlife conservation and science, to talk about their experiences…

There will be no set publishing timeframe, so keep checking back for when these go live.

For now, thank you for joining me on this incredibly exciting journey.

Making science accessible is my goal.

I hope you will enjoy this process alongside me, learn something new along the way, and fall as in love with science, research, animals and conservation as I am… (hmm, that last one is a tall order… just enjoy!).

Let’s get those Minds in Motion.

Lauren

P.S. Let’s be friends!

I would love to hear from you; drop me an email. Have suggestions and feedback? Something cool you want me to read? Or just want to say hello? Please do!
